If you save a rig as a template while specific drawings are loaded in the timeline, those drawings might not travel with the rig. Fix: Ensure all drawings are saved in the "Drawings" folder of the scene or use "Export > Drawing Package."
Toon Boom Harmony distinguishes between assets meant for a single project and those meant for widespread studio use. The Local (Symbol) Library
The left side displays your folder structure, separating local scene assets from global project templates. The right side shows visual previews of your assets, allowing you to scrub through animations before importing them.
Templates can contain anything: a single drawing, a fully rigged character with master controllers, complex node networks, or entire animated sequences.
By default, Toon Boom locks library folders to prevent accidental modifications.

are individual files on your hard drive that can be dragged into any project, whereas are usually internal to a specific project file. The Drag-and-Drop Workflow
| Feature | Toon Boom Harmony | Adobe Animate | Blender (Grease Pencil) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | | Native, robust library system with global, job, and scene-level folders. | Basic symbol library; relies heavily on OS file structure for complex asset management. | No native, centralized asset library; relies on Blender's Asset Browser (which is more general 3D-focused). | | Collaboration | Designed for teams with server-based libraries, version control, and dedicated production management tools (Harmony Producer). | Good for small teams but lacks native server-level asset management for large-scale production. | Primarily a single-user tool; team workflows often require third-party version control. | | Rigging Reuse | Master templates allow for entire rig hierarchies (bones, deformers, drawings) to be saved as a single, reusable asset. | Uses symbols for reuse but struggles with maintaining complex skeletal animation hierarchies across projects. | Asset system is less integrated with Grease Pencil's rigging capabilities. | | Industry Focus | Broadcast-quality TV and feature film animation; standard for major studios. | Web animation, interactive content, and simpler character animation. | 2D animation within a 3D environment; used for dynamic, stylized projects. |
Beyond simple storage, the Library is the engine behind "cut-out" or "puppet" animation. In Harmony, a character is rarely a single static drawing; it is a complex hierarchy of layers, known as a rig, connected to deformers and pegs. Building a functional rig is a time-intensive process that requires technical precision. The Library allows riggers to save these complex templates complete with all their internal logic. When an animator needs that character, they do not have to rebuild the hierarchy; they simply instantiate the template. This concept of "smart templates" extends to props and effects as well. For example, a specific mouth chart for lip-syncing can be saved as a template, allowing the animator to quickly swap phonemes without redrawing them for every frame.
Ensure your Library view is open and that you have enabled on your target folder.
